[edit] Bush Administration zeros out Amtrak funding for FY 2006
Since the Administration believes that serious reform needs to take place in the national passenger rail system, it has decided to terminate all funding for Amtrak except for $360 million which will be used to assist local commuter railroads on the NE Corridor to continue service.
- It is the responsibility of the federal government to provide transportation choices to enhance the convenient, safe, and reliable mobility of citizens across state boundaries. The federal government should assist states in developing ways to conveniently, safely, and reliably move people within states.
- It is the responsibility of the federal government to encourage transportation modes which are low or nonpolluting as well as are land and energy efficient.
- It is the responsibility of the federal government to provide funding based on the inherent efficiencies of each transportation mode.
